SUMMARY:University City Neighborhood Canvass at University Village Park
DESCRIPTION:This is it! Join us at the southwest corner of University Village Park at Cather Ave. and Florey St. (where Gullstrand becomes Cather) in University City this Sunday\, Nov. 6th\, at 10 a.m. for the final (!) Sunday neighborhood canvass with our Tommy Hough for San Diego City Council campaign. \nIf you haven’t canvassed with us yet\, download the PDI app to your phone to log in and load your turf. \nThe Downtown establishment continues to send out sleazy hit mail pieces and well over $2 million of independent expenditure and political action committee (PACs) money to maintain the status quo in District 6\, even as our working and middle class neighbors struggle to pay the highest electricity rates in the nation and the highest water and sewage rates in the state\, with road repair and park maintenance funds now flattened by the city’s $86 million 101 Ash Street settlement and little hope of expanded transit anytime soon. \nWe need maximum affordability with new housing as neighbors are being pushed out of affordable rentals to make way for luxury upgrades or new construction. Newly-built developments are already far beyond the reach of neighbors who work for a living or go to school\, and are unlikely to have any sizable parks to accommodate the needs of residents. \nOur remedy? Talk with neighbors and share the news this final weekend about Tommy and a change of direction at City Hall – and let them know we don’t support Downtown’s Trash Tax. \nAs always\, bring water\, sunscreen\, a hat\, and be sure your phone is fully charged. \nUniversity Village Park is best accessed by taking Gullstrand St. north from Governor Dr. to where Gullstrand St. becomes Cather Ave. at Florey Street. See you there one last time!

SUMMARY:San Diego Union-Tribune District 6 Candidate Forum
DESCRIPTION:Join our campaign for an in-person District 6 candidate forum hosted by the San Diego Union-Tribune this Tuesday\, Oct. 18th\, at 6 p.m. at the Serra Mesa–Kearny Mesa Branch Library\, located at 9005 Aero Drive\, San Diego\, CA 92123. \nCome by and show your support\, and hear about our positions on the issues our neighbors are facing in Mira Mesa\, Kearny Mesa\, University City\, UTC\, Sorrento Valley\, Rancho Encantada\, western Scripps Ranch\, and Miramar. \nThe forum will be streamed live on Facebook. \nThe U.T. has shared a number of helpful links as part of their promotion for the event\, including: \n\nTommy’s general election questionnaire in the Union-Tribune\, which was published on Oct. 4th.\nIf the questionnaire article is behind a paywall\, you can also read it here.\nAn MTS link so you can plan your trip via public transportation.\nView new council district boundaries at the city’s redistricting website.\n\nAs we arrive in the home stretch of the campaign\, can you lend a hand on our Neighborhoods First campaign? We need your vote and your voice today. Join us to help bring real leadership and advocacy to our District 6 communities. If you can’t make time to volunteer with our campaign\, you can also make a contribution. \nWhatever you can spare will get us one step closer to winning\, whether it’s more yard signs or sending another round of mail to our District 6 neighbors. Give to our effort today to help us cross the finish line with a WIN. \nIt’s been wonderful catching up with so many neighbors\, many of whom we haven’t seen since we began our canvassing journey through District 6 well over a year ago. Ballots are out now\, so please let your family\, friends\, loved ones\, and neighbors know we have one chance to get this right. Now\, let’s win this together. \nLet us know if you have any questions\, and thank you to the San Diego Union-Tribune for presenting this in-person event. We look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Environmental Democrats University City Walk for Tommy Hough
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, Oct. 16th\, at 9:30 a.m. at the southwest corner of University Village Park at Cather Ave. and Florey St. (where Gullstrand becomes Cather) in University City for a special neighborhood canvass with San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action\, the only environmentally-minded affinity club in the San Diego County Democratic Party. \nWe’ll also be canvassing for our friends Cody Petterson for School Board\, and Barbara Bry for County Assessor\, Recorder\, and County Clerk. \nIf you haven’t canvassed with us before\, you’ll want to download the PDI app to your phone and our team can train you to log in and load your turf. If you’ve never gone canvassing with us before\, we can pair you with one of our veteran canvassers first. \nThe Downtown establishment continues to pour hundreds of thousands of dollars into independent expenditures and political action committees (PACs) to maintain the status quo in District 6\, even as our working and middle class neighbors pay the highest electricity rates in the nation and the highest water and sewage rates in the state\, road repairs and park maintenance have been flattened by the city’s $86 million 101 Ash Street settlement\, new housing developments are unlikely to have any sizable parks to accommodate the needs of residents\, and we have little hope of expanded transit anytime soon outside of the Blue Line on the west edge of District 6 in UTC. \nOur remedy? Talk with neighbors and share the news to vote for Tommy for a change of direction at City Hall – and share the good news about Cody’s and Barbara’s campaigns as well with help from the Environmental Democrats\, a club Tommy co-founded with other environmental believers in 2014. See you at the southwest corner of the park! \n \n

SUMMARY:Vista La Jolla Meet and Greet in UTC
DESCRIPTION:One of the biggest changes to the District 6 landscape in last year’s redistricting process was the addition of University City to District 6. And the Vista La Jolla area of UTC\, just off Towne Center Dr. east of Montrose Park\, is notable as the only single-family home community in the UTC area north of Rose Canyon. \nThe president of the community’s HOA has invited our campaign to a joint D6 “meet and greet” event at his and his wife’s home on Sunday\, Sept. 18th\, from 2 to 4 p.m. \nWe’ve already met many of the neighbors in the community and discussed a variety of issues at the door\, but we heartily invite you to stop by\, say hi\, shake hands\, ask questions\, and express whatever concerns you may have about the community or the city. \nWe’re looking forward to seeing you again – or meeting for the first time! Join us on Sunday\, Sept. 18th\, at 2 p.m.

SUMMARY:Special Sunday Mira Mesa Neighborhood Canvass at Mesa Verde Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Mesa Verde Neighborhood Park on Gold Coast Dr. in Mira Mesa for a special Sunday canvass in Mira Mesa this Sunday\, Aug. 28th\, at 10 a.m. We’ll meet on the south (Gold Coast) side of the park\, across from the entrance to the Mariposa townhouse HOA. \nIf you haven’t canvassed with us before\, download the PDI app to your phone and our team will train you to log in and load your turf. It’s easy\, and if you’ve never gone canvassing before\, no problem – you can walk with one of our veteran canvassers first. \nBig developers\, special interests\, real estate speculators\, energy outlets and other instruments of the Downtown establishment are pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into faceless PACs and independent expenditures to tip the results in the District 6 race to maintain the status quo – even as an absurd Mira Mesa Community Plan is proposed\, public safety goes underfunded\,  our working and middle class neighbors pay the highest electricity rates in the nation and the highest water and sewage rates in the state\, the ability to pay for needed road and park repairs has been taken away by the city’s 101 Ash Street settlement\, our open space and Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP) lands are treated like placeholders\, and we have little hope of any expanded transit anytime soon. \nOur remedy: Talk with our neighbors and share the news! Vote for Tommy for change at City Hall! \nBring water\, sunscreen\, a hat\, and be sure your phone is fully charged\, and THANK YOU for your support. If you’d like a lawn sign\, send us your address and we’ll deliver one or have one for you on Saturday. \nMesa Verde Neighborhood Park is located just east of Camino Ruiz and west of Mason Elementary School on Gold Coast Drive. You can also access the park from Flanders Drive on the north.

SUMMARY:San Diego 350 Climate Justice Virtual District 6 Forum
DESCRIPTION:Great news as San Diego 350 and the League of Women Voters will host a District 6 candidates forum focusing on climate justice on Monday\, April 25\, at 7 p.m. \nYou can register for the forum here\, and your Zoom confirmation e-mail will include a link to submit questions. \nOriginally known as 350.org\, the organization was founded in 2007 by environmentalist Bill McKibben\, who wrote one of the first books on global warming for public consumption\, and often writes about climate change and renewable energy. \nHere in San Diego County\, we’re fighting a two-front war against climate change with wildfires encroaching from the east\, and rising sea levels along our shore. While many of our region’s cities now have climate action plan policies on the books to curb and combat climate change\, it will take leadership and vision to ensure those policies are implemented\, and that the deadlines set out in each document are reached in time. \nSan Diego 350.org continues to serve a critical role in ensuing those policies are met\, and must continue to hold policymakers and polluters accountable to California’s unique relationship to the environment\, and our desire to meaningfully reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to stave off the worst effects of climate change.

SUMMARY:Gold Coast Drive Neighborhood Meet and Greet
DESCRIPTION:We love our city\, our neighborhood\, and our larger District 6 community. It’s home. \nBut as my 2019 op/ed piece in Times of San Diego pointed out\, no other street in the city better personifies Downtown’s neglect and dismissive attitude toward D6 than the east end of Gold Coast Dr. from Camino Ruiz to Black Mountain Rd. \nDespite this\, our neighbors on Gold Coast – and the neighborhood that has grown around them over the last several decades – are some of the most welcoming in our community. We’d like you to meet them. \nJoin our hosts Jerry Mungo and Lisa Nguyen at their home at 8615 Gold Coast Dr. on Sunday\, April 3rd\, at 2 p.m. for a Gold Coast Dr. neighborhood meet and greet as we discuss the condition of our roads and sidewalks in District 6\, the legacy of deferred maintenance in Mira Mesa\, and what our neighbors need from our next District 6 councilmember. \nAfter years of having our council seat at City Hall co-opted by Downtown lobbyists and special interests\, we all agree our neighborhoods need to come first with the open District 6 seat in 2022. Come join the conversation. \nRSVP for this special event now to meet D6 candidate and Mira Mesa neighbor Tommy Hough on Sunday\, April 3rd\, at 2 p.m. \nNeed a Tommy yard sign? We’ll have plenty at the event\, or you can e-mail us your address and we’ll get a sign to you the same day.

SUMMARY:San Diego Persian New Year Nowroz Festival
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to announce that Tommy will be speaking at the upcoming San Diego Persian New Year Nowroz Festival this Sunday\, March 27th. While the San Diego Nowroz Festival is a daylong event\, we expect Tommy will speak between 2 and 2:30 p.m. at the Port of San Diego’s Ruocco Park at 585 Harbor Lane. \nThis year is particularly poignant for Afghan Americans struck with the grief of losing their homeland and security. The organizing Azizi Foundation and event sponsors hope this year’s Nowroz festivities will not only help with the recovery process\, but help enable a greater number of newly-arrived Afghan refugees to find a new home in the United States. \nPurchase tickets at the festival’s Eventbrite page.
