San Diego County Planning Commissioner Tommy Hough has earned the endorsement of the Sierra Club in his campaign for San Diego City Council, which noted Hough’s “demonstrated commitment to protecting the environment” in their letter of endorsement. This marks the second time the heritage environmental organization has endorsed Hough for San Diego City Council.
“This means a great deal to me, and to our District 6 communities,” said Hough. “For over 20 years I’ve put my personal and professional time toward advancing the cause of conservation and best environmental practices, and I’m committed to bringing a strong environmental sensibility to my job as a city councilmember so our neighbors have clean air, clean water, open space, and effective transit options.”
“Tommy checks all the boxes for an environmental endorsement,” said San Diego Chapter Chair Lisa Ross. “With a long-standing commitment to environmental justice, protection of public lands, and climate action, we are pleased to announce the Sierra Club San Diego Chapter, representing over 14,000 members, endorses Tommy Hough for City Council in the 6th District.”
“With our protected canyons and habitat preserves under threat from inappropriate development, it is crucial we elect someone with Tommy’s strong environmental advocacy background to the City Council,” said Ross. “We are confident he will work to protect air and water quality in all San Diego communities.”
Hough spent the last three years serving as a consultant and coordinator for the ReWild Mission Bay campaign through the San Diego Audubon Society, served as vice president of Citizens Coordinate for Century III (C3), and managed communications for the San Diego Surfrider chapter. Utilizing his platform as a radio host at FM 94/9, KPRI, and 91X, Hough brought considerable public awareness to the Save Trestles campaign, along with wildfire issues, climate action, community choice energy, and the preservation of native species.
The co-founder and original president of San Diego County Democrats for Environmental Action, Hough has served as a California Democratic Party delegate since 2015, and was a member of the San Diego County Democratic Party Central Committee for seven years.
“Tommy Hough is a transformative candidate,” said Dr. Peter Andersen, previous chair of the San Diego Sierra Club. “We need an environmental champion on San Diego City Council to stand against destructive sprawl proposals, preserve our Multiple Species Conservation Plan, and promote active improvements to our city’s outdated Climate Action Plan. Mira Mesa neighborhood advocate Tommy Hough is that candidate in District 6.”
