With only a few days to go until Nov. 8th, there’s a lot of political campaigns demanding your time.
But if you watch nothing else today, watch this news clip from KUSI that exposes several of the smears leveled against my campaign by my opponents’ Downtown supporters – most notably a mailer designed to look like it came from our campaign supporting a “defund the police” position.
For the record, we DON’T support that position. It’s a smear and a lie made by my opponent’s supporters.
As I warned neighbors months ago, District 6 mailboxes are being flooded with attack ads and smears from special interests supporting my opponent. It’s gross, but those are the games desperate campaigns with too much money play.
The “defund the police” smear was mailed by Community Voices, one of several faceless Political Action Committees, or PACs, that filed in support of my opponent.
Not only did they use the logo of an organization that never endorsed me on their mailer, the PAC’s principal officer is the mayoral-appointed vice chair of the San Diego Housing Commission. So far they’ve taken in some $242,400 from organizations like:
- Associated General Contractors
- San Diego Downtown Partnership
- Public Dynamics
- San Diego Building and Construction Trades Council
- Midway Rising
- A committee formed by Councilmember Chris Cate
- La Jolla Crossroads Apartment Complex
- Costa Verde Village Luxury Apartments
Not exactly representing the middle class, are they?
The reality is moneyed Downtown interests are desperate to distract you from the fact my opponent:
- Supported City Hall’s $86 million bailout of 101 Ash Street.
- Supports the Trash Tax.
- Said nothing about the Gold Coast Drive bicycle lane until after it was removed.
- Took no position on the rezoning of south University City until after the plan was shelved.
- Voted to build an office park in the riparian creekbed of Carroll Creek in defiance of Mira Mesa’s own community plan
- Supports the proposal to increase the population of Mira Mesa by 50,000 people without additional parks, schools, fire stations, or road improvements.
- Says the reconstruction of Gold Coast Drive is a “done deal.”
My opponents’ supporters will say anything. And they have the money to do it.
But as I’ve said before, they know we have the issues and that I stand with our D6 communities – not Downtown. I stand with our neighbors who work hard, play by the rules, and simply want to be heard and respected at City Hall. It’s why our campaign slogan is Neighborhoods First.
That’s why this election is so important. I need your vote, your volunteer time, and your support these final days. Can you chip in a little something extra to help us fight back?
These last days of the campaign we’re going to walk, wave, and hustle with the good news and good cheer that’s been the hallmark of our effort. With your help, and your vote, we can ensure real middle class representation for District 6.
